Royal Gorge Morning Ramble, August 8

This is the next event in the Royal Gorge Morning Ramble series.

Royal Gorge will provide breakfast and a short presentation followed by a guided hike touring part of the Royal Gorge property. This will be a prime opportunity to learn more about upcoming plans for Royal Gorge, and to experience first-hand the scenic trails and vistas of the Royal Gorge lands at Donner Summit.

The speaker will be Kevin Whitlock, registered professional forester and owner of Under the Trees, an environmental consulting and ecosystems service firm, speaking on the health of the forest and general forestry issues of the Donner Summit area.

Groundwater Hydrology Presentation Hosted by SLDSCA and MAPF

Serene Lakes/Donner Summit Conservation Association (SLDSCA) along with Mountain Area Preservation Foundation (MAPF), are sponsoring a groundwater hydrology presentation at the Serene Lakes Firehouse on Sunday, August 31, 7 p.m. Chris Farrar, a USGS hydrologist who specializes in the Donner Summit area will be the speaker.

Placer County Museums Heritage Tour

On Saturday and Sunday, August 9 & 10, admission will be FREE at 18 Placer County museums for the Placer County Museums Heritage Tour.

Participating museums include: Roseville Historical Society Carnegie Museum, Maid Interpretive Center, Rocklin History Museum, Griffith Quarry Museum, Placer County Museum, Bernhard Museum Complex, Gold Country Museum, Benton Welty School Room, Joss House Museum, Gold Country Medical History Museum, Forest Hill Divide Museum, Colfax Area Heritage Museum, Golden Drift Museum, Big Bend Visitor Center, Western SkiSport Museum, Gatekeeper's Museum, Watson Cabin and Tahoe Maritime Museum.

Donner Summit Community Person of the Year Announced!

Donner Summit Area Association (DSAA) would like to congratulate Jennifer Montgomery for being selected as 2008 Donner Summit Community Person of the Year.

Jennifer has been a full-time resident of Donner Summit for over 20 years. She worked as a volunteer fire fighter for many years with the Donner Summit Fire Department. Jennifer is a small business owner. She is also well-known for organizing the Donner Summit Annual Cleanup for many years along with Nancy Latimer. Jennifer works to help build the local Donner Summit Community.

Many thanks to Jennifer for all she contributes to our community.

 

Sierra Nevada Alliance (SNA) 15th Annual Conference and Anniversary Celebration

Sierra Nevada Alliance is holding its 15th Annual Conference and Anniversary Celebration, "Leading in a Climate of Change: Hot Topics, Cold Facts and New Answers for the Sierra".

This annual conference has been called "the best conservation conference in the Sierra". There will be exciting workshops, field trips, guest speakers, network opportunities, and SNA's Annual Auction and Awards Dinner Party.

SYRCL's Students on the Summit Leadership Training for Truckee High School Students

South Yuba River Citizens' League (SYRCL) is offering a Leadership Training in the Wilderness for local high school students.

Who: Twelve (12) incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors from Grass Valley / Nevada City and Donner Summit communities, lead by SYRCL staff.

What: One-day training for SYRCL's Great Yuba CleanUp, followed by a night of orientation and educational speakers at Clair Tappaan Lodge on Donner Summit. Then two nights backpacking on Grouse Ridge to develop map and compass, ecologoy and leadership skills.

Why: Students learn the far-reaching impacts of land use in their community and connect it to the entire watershed, plus students receive training to become site leaders for SYRCL's Great Yuba CleanUp on Sept. 20.

When: Friday - Monday, August 8-11.
