Propane Explosion

A house on Alpine Way in Serene Lakes blew up the other day. Here are a few more snaps than you can find in the article in the Sierra Sun. The front of the house wan't that badly damaged, but the entire back wall of the house was blown off. Notice the window panes -- fully intact, but blow out about 30' from the house. Most propane explosions happen when propane leaks from either the tank, or, more often, from a leak in the line usually near the secondary regulator near the house. When the lines are compacted by 10' of snow, they bend just enough to start a leak. The propane flows downhill, often inside the house, and is ignited when the water heater or other appliance switches on.
Luckly, in this case, nobody was home. Usually you can smell the mercaptin in the propane (rotten egg smell), but sometimes the chemical can be filtered out if the propane flows through enough snow.
Be careful. Dig out your propane tanks and keep your lines clear. Get your lines inspected each year.

Working Meeting Minutes
The latest working meeting minutes detail our discussions on the first draft of our community survey, details of the latest attempt to get a train stop at Soda Springs, and updates on local sewage treatment issues. We also choose a new DSAA logo, which will be shown here on the website in a few weeks when the final design is finished.
The next DSAA working meeting will take place on Thursday May 4th at 6:30pm. Everyone is invited to attend. The next full membership meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 1st. Both meetings will likely take place at Donner Summit Lodge through the kind graces of Bob and Maria Montalvo.
