Royal Gorge Update

Royal Gorge recently sent out two postcards, one announcing the posting of the Public Input Report (permanent link in the document section to the left), another describing water drilling activities and a letter in response to a recent article in the SLPOA newsletter.

The Foster/Syme Access Committee met this weekend with Todd Foster, Kirk Syme, Mike Livak, Neil Erasmus and Peter Mayfield to discuss issues related to land access in and around the Royal Gorge property. The first topic was the rumor that the developers were pursuing privatization of USFS parcel between Serene Lakes and Van Norden meadow adjacent to Soda Springs road. The developers stated unequivocally that they were not pursing acquisition or privatization of the USFS parcel and promised not to pursue it in the future. It was clear that they understood the value of this public land to the community.

We touched on a number of other issues including the importance of public access to the county roads for skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months, and we agreed to further discussions about how to provide access to USFS parcels surrounded by private land and ski-in-ski-out possibilities. Also note that Royal Gorge has provided written permission to hike along the trails in their private lands. We will try to get permission to post the full minutes of these meetings when they become available.

After the Access Committee meeting, the developers attended the yearly SLPOA membership meeting where they answered questions and discussed recent activities. They announced that they hope to have early plans available sometime later this fall. These early plans will be presented to the public prior to official submission into the CEQA planning process. The developers encourage everyone to submit their ideas and opinions both before and after these plans are available.

We also heard updates on the successful merger of the Donner Summit Fire Department and Truckee FD, along with the election of five new SLPOA board members. I'm sure the SLPOA website will have all the meeting details.
